Road Rules and Laws for Driving a Scooter

02/26/2021

If you’re considering scooter rentals in Key West when you’re on vacation, you’ll want to make sure that you know the rules of the road and laws first. It’s always better to be properly prepared, and this means knowing the regulations before you decide to rent. After all, there are some differences between renting scooters and renting cars.

The Traffic Laws

When you’re driving, pay attention to the road around you, along with all of the signs, lights, arrows, etc. Scooters are motor vehicles, and this means that you need to obey all of the motor vehicle laws that would apply to cars and other vehicles when you’re on a scooter. You need to stop at stoplights and signs, you need to yield.

You’ll also need to be sure that your driving between the lines and driving defensively. Even though scooters are a common sight in Key West, you must still be wary of other drivers and how they are driving. Because scooters are smaller than cars, it’s easier for them to end up in a driver’s blind spot. Pay attention to how others are driving to help ensure safety.

Helmet Laws

The state of Florida doesn’t have helmet laws for those who are riding motorcycles and scooters. However, wearing a helmet is always a good idea, just in case there is an accident. Keep in mind that if you’re looking for scooter rentals in Key West, the rental agencies will often require that you wear a helmet while riding. They will provide the helmets for you to use.

Parking the Scooter

Because Key West is a scooter-friendly city, you’ll find many parking spots available specifically for scooters. This includes along the curbside and at various establishments, parks, etc. However, you can’t park them on a sidewalk or in residential parking zones, as they could be towed from those spots.

Age for Rentals

Although in Florida, it’s usually possible for a 16-year-old to get their license and to drive a scooter, this isn’t usually possible through rental facilities. Most of the time, rental companies will require that the renters and drivers be at least 18 years old. They want to have drivers that have at least a couple of years of experience on the road. Don’t rent a scooter for someone who is under 18 when you’re on vacation if it’s not allowed in the contract with the rental agency. Doing so would break the contract.

Talk with the Rental Agency

Of course, road rules and laws for driving a scooter can change from time to time, so it’s always a good idea to speak with the rental agency. Ask them what information you will need to bring when you rent your scooter, or if you’re renting online. They can let you know more about speed limits in different locations. It’s typically 25 mph in Key West. The agency can answer your questions about driving in the area, and they may even be able to suggest some places to visit.
