Key West Scooter Culture

01/08/2021

When you think about planning your vacation based in Key West FL, you might not think too much about transportation and getting around. Maybe you figure that you’ll just rent a car when you get there like you would in other places. While this could work, you’ll find that cars just aren’t the right fit for the area. This is both literally and figuratively. There isn’t always as much space to park as you might hope. Therefore, you should consider scooter rentals instead.

Why So Many Scooters?

You’ll find that there’s something of a scooter culture in Key West among the tourists and the locals alike. Many people choose to ride scooters to get from place to place rather than using other vehicles. Most will tell you that a scooter is the only type of transportation you’ll need when you’re in Key West.

While there are certainly cars and trucks in some locations, you’ll notice that there is also an abundance of scooters. Many of these people are on vacation, although there are some locals with scooters. When you see someone on a scooter, there’s a sense of camaraderie that you wouldn’t get if you were driving a car. You might even meet some new friends who are out riding scooters.

You’ll find that the Key West scooter culture tends to be open and welcoming, so you’ll feel like you fit in when you’re on vacation. Of course, the culture’s not just about having fun and being friendly. It also happens to be practical. Scooter rentals are cost-effective from a fuel point of view. You won’t spend as much as you would filling up a car with a tank of gas.

Parking, as mentioned, is another point of practicality for these vehicles. You can get to all of the interesting places that you want to visit without worrying about not having a place where you can park.

It’s the Perfect Way to See the Island

The island of Key West is only about two miles wide and four miles long. When you have a scooter, you can reach every destination that you might want to visit. You won’t have to wait as you would with public transportation, and you won’t have to pay a fortune like you would with a taxi.

No matter where you might want to go, you can get there quickly and easily with scooter rentals. It’s safe to ride scooters on the island, as everyone has become accustomed to them. It might be time that you decided to become part of the Key West scooter culture, even if you’re just visiting for a vacation.

Once you get past the initial beach area, you can spend time by a low seawall where you can take in excellent views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Southernmost Point

If you’re visiting Key West, the trip can’t be complete without taking a selfie at the buoy at the popular southernmost point. The buoy is made of colorful concrete and was created in 1983. It also happens to be one of the most exciting places to get a photo. There are often tons of people in line to get their photo so you can snap one for someone else and ask them to do the same for you.

It’s right on the ocean and includes restrooms, a beach, concession stands, a Civil War fort, and picnic areas. At the front of the park, you can also spend some time at the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Ingham Museum or the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center.

Historic Harbor Walk and Seaport

Tips for Renting a Scooter for the First Time

12/18/2020

One of the most exciting things you can do in a location you’re vacationing in is enjoying the sights and sounds while riding around on two wheels. You have more freedom to explore where you want whenever you want. It can also be less expensive than traditional transportation options. However, not everyone is experienced with renting and riding a scooter so having some tips can help a lot.

Items Needed to Rent a Scooter in Key West

Most of the time, you don’t need a lot of information to rent a scooter in Florida. As long as you have a valid driver’s license and a credit card to cover the purchase, you’re typically good to go. However, keep in mind that some rental companies require you to be at least 18 years old to rent a scooter to ride around the city. Otherwise, there’s nothing special you need to have in your possession.

Look Over the Scooter Before Riding

Before you start riding the scooter (or sign to rent it), look over it to make sure it’s in good shape. A few things to look for include the following:

Body – Is it in good shape? If there is any damage or scratches are present, make sure you take a photo before you leave the rental shop. This will prevent you from being on the hook for paying for repairs.

Tires – Take a moment to make sure they are properly inflated so you can enjoy a safe and exciting ride.

Brakes – Test whether the brakes work as soon as you have the scooter. If the brakes brush up against the handles without needing to press them in, you should ask for an alternative scooter.

Ignition – Does the ignition have any damage? Check to make sure the scooter turns on.

Lights – Make sure all of the lights are in working order. Test the gauges, the turn indicators, and the high beams.

Wear the Right Gear on a Scooter

So you have a scooter, it’s in great condition, and you’ve gone through the rental process. Now you might be wondering what you should wear when you’re out on the road. This is an important consideration since wearing the wrong gear can lead to problems if you take a spill or get in an accident.

Gloves – Wearing gloves helps protect your palms if you get into an accident. This is typically the first part of the body to hit the pavement so you want to make sure you’re protected.

A Jacket – Even in hot areas, a jacket can help prevent road rash if you crash. A thin jacket is fine in warm areas, but choose one with bright colors so drivers see you on the road.

A Helmet – Wearing a helmet is a must to keep your head protected. The best option is one that has a full faceguard.

Pants – Rather than shorts or capris, it’s best to wear a pair of long pants. You want to have as little skin exposed as possible in case of an accident.

Shoes – Nix the sandals and wear actual shoes on a scooter. Something with a closed-toe is the best option to protect your feet.

Now that you know the basics of renting and riding a scooter, consider renting one at A&M Rentals while you’re in Key West. You’ll have a great time enjoying all the sights of the city on your own terms!

How Much Does it Cost to Rent a Scooter?

12/11/2020

Interested in renting a scooter to get around Key West and the surrounding areas? If you want to experience this exciting new form of transport, you might be wondering how much it costs to enjoy. Rather than breaking your bank account to purchase a scooter that you might only use on a few occasions, renting a scooter gives you the chance to enjoy the sun and sand for only a few dollars or so.

The truth is that any major city now offers scooter rentals and you shouldn’t be surprised to see them zipping around sidewalks. That’s a good thing for those who want to ride around on a scooter since it gives you tons of options.

Types of Scooters Available for Rental

Some scooter rental companies offer a single type. This is typically a one-seater that only has room for the driver and a few of their belongings. There’s nothing wrong with that if you’re on your own and want to ride around on your own. However, some people enjoy taking a scooter ride with a friend, partner, or spouse. Thankfully, some scooter rental companies offer scooters with two seats so a duo can explore Key West together.

Ride for a Few Hours, a Couple of Days, or Even a Week

If you’ve heard about scooter rentals, you may realize that many of them are provided for a few hours so you can head to a destination or two before going back to your regular form of transportation. However, that’s not the only option when you choose one of the best scooter rental companies. Sure, you can rent a scooter by the hour or the day – but sometimes there are also options to rent for a week or longer at a time.

Considerations When Renting a Scooter

When you have plans to rent a scooter, consider a few different things. First, you want to know how long you want the scooter so you can ensure you choose a company that offers what you need. Consider whether a one-person scooter is all you need or whether you’d rather have a scooter that seats two. It also stands to reason that you want to consider the location of the scooter shop and how expensive their services are.

Some companies go above and beyond by offering additional services. For instance, the company might offer pick-up and drop-off services. This can be a huge help if you’re flying into Key West and want to use a scooter for all your transportation. There’s no need to catch a bus or get a rental car just to get to the company location.

Scooter Rental Prices

While rental prices can vary, A&M Rentals offers competitive options. A one-seater can be rented for only $35 a day, while a two-seater is $60 for the same time frame. Those who are spending longer in the city might consider a weekly rental, which can range from about $100 to $200, depending on the scooter you choose. No matter what you decide, you’re sure to have an outstanding time!

What to Know Before Renting Your Scooter on Vacation

12/04/2020

Planning to enjoy a scooter vacation with your family? There are several things you should brush up on first. Knowing safety measures, local laws, and rental tips will go a long way. Scooters can be a great choice for vacations since they allow you to efficiently get to all the best tourist spots over a few days. But make sure you know the legal requirements, such as having the right equipment or needing to wear a helmet.

Regulations on Riding Scooters

Before you decide to have a vacation on scooters, make sure you know the age requirements for the area you are in. In the United States and Canada, most individuals who are 14 or 16 can ride on a scooter. However, rental companies may require you to be 18 to use theirs. In most areas of Europe, you have to be 16 or older to drive a scooter.

The Rental Process

When you visit a rental company, make sure you read the entire contract and fully understand it. If you aren’t comfortable with the terms provided to you, it’s best to choose a different rental company. You should have your identification ready to show the clerk as well as a credit card to make the rental payment.

After you get a scooter, take photos or video of the vehicle. This ensures you can prove the state the scooter was in when you received it. It’s best to do this while you’re still talking to a rental employee so there’s no argument about damages when you take the scooter back.

Take Good Care of the Scooter

After you have the scooter in your possession, remember to always lock it up and take your helmet with you when you stop. There’s nothing that can more easily ruin a vacation than forgetting to lock a scooter to have it stolen. Even those who are cautious and take all the precautions should keep an eye on their scooter whenever possible to make sure it hasn’t been damaged or stolen.

Insurance is Part of the Process

It’s a good idea to speak with your insurance provider before you rent a scooter to make sure it’s covered. If you aren’t and end up in an accident, you could be forced to pay for damages. While this might be less of an issue when vacationing in a country you’re from, while overseas it can be more difficult due to the language barrier.

Always Stay Protected

Scooters can be considered safe due to the small engines and how easily they maneuver. However, accidents can happen due to how small they are, which makes them harder to see. Make sure you wear visible clothing, stay out of quick traffic, and remain out of vehicle blind spots.

As long as you consider these tips, you can enjoy riding around the streets of Key West during a vacation. Pick up an excellent scooter at A&M Rentals or get a few for the entire family. You’ll get to experience the city in a whole new way and you’re sure to have a lot of fun while you do it!

Scooter Rules on the Road

11/27/2020

Ready to rent a scooter to zip around Key West? Great idea! Before you rent that scooter you need to be sure you know the rules of the road.

There are two classifications of scooters in the state of Florida: motor scooters, and motorized scooters. The basic difference is motor scooters have a saddle or a seat, and motorized scooters don’t. To be considered a motorized scooter, the vehicle must have three wheels or less, may not exceed a speed of 30 miles-per-hour, and does not have a seat, or saddle. (You are in a standing position when you ride.) With a seat, it is considered a motor scooter.

In Florida, motorized scooters are not street-legal, which means they can’t be operated on sidewalks or roads. On the other hand, Florida does allow counties and cities to make their own rules when it comes to motorized scooters. The only caveat is that the federal law is followed, which allows a maximum speed of 15 miles per hour. Motorized scooters aren’t required to be registered, and you are also not required to wear a helmet if you are 16 or older. (Though it is highly recommended.) You do, however, need to be a valid driver’s license to operate a motorized scooter in Florida.

If you are driving a motor scooter (with a seat or saddle), in Florida it is street-legal and may be operated on the road, as long as it has been registered. A title and license plate are also required. You are not allowed to drive on highways, because most motor scooter engines are designed for a 40 mph maximum speed. You need to be at least 16 years old to drive a motor scooter, along with having a valid driver’s license. The same laws that apply to other vehicles on the road, apply to motor scooters. This includes driving under the influence of alcohol, speed limits, etc.

Renting a scooter can be a great way to make lasting memories of your visit to Key West. Be safe, understand the rules of the road, and scoot safely. A&M Scooters in Key West will help make you feel safe so you know how to ride the scooter around Key West! Find out more information on our scooter rentals today! Key West Scooter Safety 101

11/20/2020

What could be more fun than renting a scooter when you visit Key West? Well…nothing, so when you rent that scooter, it’s a good idea to know how to take care of it while you’ve got it.

If you plan to have some fun on wheels, be sure to stay aware of the tire pressure. While each vehicle may differ slightly, the ideal tire pressure range should range from about 18 to 24 PSI, for the tire upfront, and the back tire should range from 28 to 36 PSI. If you are riding with a companion, your rear tire should have a higher PSI. The same goes for any extra cargo you load. Be careful, overinflated tires car wear prematurely thanks to the increased road friction. This can lead to them becoming punctured easily. Proper air pressure will lessen the risk of a crash, traction loss, and the potential of getting stuck with a flat tire.

Low engine oil in your motor scooter can damage the engine. Keep an eye out for any signs of oil leakage, and if you see an issue, be sure to use the properly-rated oil. When you fill-up, be sure to use gas that is ethanol-free. Ethanol may absorb water and lead to the vehicle’s plastic tanks deteriorating.

Be sure the brakes are working properly while you are using the scooter. A good indicator of brake pads that are wearing out is how much pressure you have to exert on the pedal to activate the brakes. If you hear a groaning or whooshing sound, this can also be a sign of a brake issue.

There are just a few simple things to be aware of when you take that scoot around beautiful Key West. Stay aware, be careful, and have a blast.

Key West Scooter Safety 101

11/13/2020

Traveling to Key West is always an excellent idea. There are a ton of cool sites, and the weather is always awesome. Don’t think there’s a way to make the trip even better? Think: Scooter!

Renting scooters in Key West automatically pumps up the fun factor, but if you’ve never rented a scooter before, there are few rules of the road you’ll want to know before you go.

The first thing to keep in mind is that motor scooters follow the same rules as all of the other motorized vehicles on the road. Being that you’re on two wheels, that typically makes you less visible, and therefore more vulnerable than larger vehicles on the road. Be sure to keep up with the speed limit, driving far below the speed limit does not give other vehicles the same amount of time to slow down when they see you. Scooters are not allowed in bike lanes, because they are motorized.

Scooters are lightweight and have small tires. The center of gravity is higher and a quick maneuver, or riding on unstable road surfaces, can cause you to have a spill. Always look ahead to be aware of what’s coming, and be conscious of the road surfaces you are driving on. Gravel roads, roads with lots of potholes, and sandy surfaces are to be taken with extreme caution, or better yet, avoided altogether.

When driving near parked cars, keep enough distance between your scooter and car doors. An unexpectedly opened car door can cause a big impact. Also, avoid driving the scooter between lanes of stopped, or slowed traffic. Other drivers are not likely aware of you in moving traffic, so drive assuming no one can see you.

For extra safety, try to say on streets with less traffic, and avoid roads that have speed limits well above the speed limit of the scooter. Choose roads that are typically dry, and if it’s raining, you may want to consider renting a scooter another day. Wherever you go, wear a helmet! Even though helmets are optional in Florida if you’re over 21, wearing a helmet could be the difference between a little spill and a serious injury.

Renting a scooter in Key West can be a blast. With a few simple precautions and some basic awareness, you can scoot your way to one great trip to Key West!
