Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park

Also called Fort Taylor, this state park is a National Historic Monument that was an essential part of the American Civil War. For just six dollars per vehicle, you can get an all-day pass to explore the grounds of this southernmost state park in the continental U.S.!

Check out the cannons and gun ports that were used by soldiers in both the Civil and Spanish-American Wars! Then, take some time to picnic or swim at the best beach in Key West, located in the southern part of the park!

The Hemingway Home and Museum

This unique opportunity allows you to explore the home and life of the famous poet and author Ernest M. Hemingway. His home was built in Key West in 1851 and is now available to tour every day of the year!

After you check out the home and museum, be sure to walk the grounds as well! Here, you can check out Hemingway’s impressive pool and garden. There is a beautiful variety of flowers throughout the grounds! Plus, while you walk the grounds you may run into one of the 60 polydactyl cats located on the property! These six-toed felines run the grounds in honor of Hemingway’s six-toed cat named Snow White!

The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory

Looking for a great place to check out the beautiful nature in Key West? Look no further than this conservatory! You’ll be able to see over 50 different species of butterflies as well as other plants and birds that call Florida home.

You can also learn about butterflies in impressive detail. From their original homes to their anatomy and life cycle, you’ll leave the conservatory feeling like a butterfly expert! Be sure to check out the gift shop after you tour the grounds so you can take home a beautiful butterfly-inspired keepsake!

Key West Lighthouse

The Key West Lighthouse was opened in 1848 and was one of the first in the country to have a female Keeper. This lighthouse was built for the U.S. Navy base on the island to help ships navigate the shallow waters around the Florida Keys. Though decommissioned in 1969, this lighthouse still stands as a testament to the heritage of the island!

Visitors can walk up the 88 steps to the top of the lighthouse to get a great view of the areas around the island. Be sure to check out the photos and items collected from previous lighthouse Keepers to get a glimpse at what life was like for these important members of the lighthouse staff!
