Key West Scooter Rentals – Basic Tips

Key West scooter rentals: Basic Tips! Renting a scooter is a great way to get around Key West. They’re small, agile, and affordable. They’re also fun for all ages, from teenagers to older adults. However, if you’ve never rented a scooter before, you should know a few things.

Your Initial Check

When you stop by our office at A&M Scooters, to pick up your Key West scooter rental, take the time to do some basic checks. Look over the scooter from tip to tail. Check the tires, look over the engine, and check the lights and their controls. The goal here is to familiarize yourself with the scooter so that you know where everything is and how it operates. That applies to turning on the lights if you’re driving after dark to filling up the fuel tank if you need a bit of gas. The more familiar you are with the scooter, the more enjoyable your time will be.

Ask for a Briefing

If you’ve never ridden a Key West scooter before, we recommend that you talk with one of our staff members before picking up your rental. They’ll be able to provide you with safety and operation information, tips about driving on the island, and a lot more. Our staff members help set us apart – they’re always happy to go the extra mile for our customers.

Wear the Right Gear

While Florida law does not require you to wear a helmet, many of our customers prefer to do so. A helmet will protect your head in the event of an accident and can save your life.

Take It for a Test Ride

Before you get out on the road, take your Key West A&M scooter rental for a test ride. This gives you the chance to get familiar with the handling and controls before you’re in traffic. A large parking lot is an ideal place for a test ride.

Operation is pretty straightforward:

  1. Put the key in the ignition and turn it on.
  2. Set the kill switch to “run”.
  3. Start the engine while holding the brake lever.
  4. Slowly release the brake while pulling down on the throttle to accelerate.
  5. Push back on the throttle to slow down.
  6. Push the handlebars in the direction you want to turn while leaning in that direction.
  7. Practice balancing while riding straight, turning, and stopping.

Choose Your Parking Areas Carefully

It’s tempting to park your scooter anywhere it will fit. Resist that urge, particularly when it comes to the sidewalks in most areas. While some areas allow sidewalk parking, most do not, and you could find yourself with a parking ticket. Always park your scooter in designated parking areas.

Watch Out for Obstacles

While Key West’s roads are decent, there’s always the chance that you’ll encounter an obstacle, like a pothole or a speed bump. Watch out for these and navigate around them with care.

Riding a Key West scooter rental is simple and very enjoyable once you get the hang of it. We hope you enjoy your visit to the island, and make sure to check with our staff if you have any questions during your visit!
