You have just landed in paradise, the last thing you want to do on your trip is deal with traffic, parking tickets, or long walks in flip-flops. Even though the Smart Play is a scooter, we see first-timers wobbling down Duval every day like newborn giraffes.
But you just need to stick with us for five minutes, and you’ll be able to ride like a local without having to figure it out the hard way.
Why a Scooter Beats Every Other Ride
Cars choke on old island streets, rideshares bleed your budget, and even the bikes usually leave you sweating. With a scooter, you can get through those narrow lanes, park for free almost anywhere, and keep the wind in your face.
It’s more fun and cheaper than hopping in two taxis. And you can go around whenever you want, without having to wait or pay more during peak times.
Know the Rules Before You Ride
- Age and license. Florida requires riders to be 18 with a valid driver’s license, and no motorcycle endorsement is needed for 50cc scooters.
- Helmets. Riders over 16 are not required to wear one, but we hand them out anyway because your brain is worth it
- Roads. Stay inside Key West city limits, obey stop lights, and never ride on sidewalks.
Pick Your Perfect Scooter
Are you a solo explorer? Grab a single-seater as it is the lightest and easiest to handle. And if you are traveling as a duo, take a double-seater scooter and keep the romance rolling without juggling backpacks.
Families often rent multiple double-seaters so everyone gets a turn at the handlebars. All our scooters come fueled, tuned, and ready, so the only decision you make is how long you want to ride.
Five-Minute Safety Starter Pack
- Practice in the lot until you can start, brake, and turn smoothly, especially if you haven’t ridden one before.
- Wear closed-toe shoes, sunglasses, and at least a light shirt. And that’s because the island sun and asphalt aren’t so forgiving.
- Keep a distance from cars as several tourists stop without warning.
- Check the weather every morning. Sand and slippery roads are a recipe for disaster.
- Don’t drink and drive; DUIs also apply to scooters, plus there’s most likely a walkable bar around, anyway.
Where to Ride and Park Like a Local
Old Town is peppered with scooter bays that are first-come, first-served. Lock up there, never on private sidewalks, and you avoid the infamous orange parking ticket. Want a stress-free loop? Follow this route:
- Start with the famous breakfast at Cuban Coffee Queen on Margaret Street.
- Take a beach break at Higgs and take selfies on the pier.
- Take art stops in Bahama Village for murals and handmade jewelry.
- If you get to Mallory Square ten minutes early, you can still get a front row seat for the sunset finale.
The entire distance is barely six breezy miles with zero parking drama.
Rookie Mistakes to Dodge
- Ignoring fuel. Gas is on us at A&M Rentals as part of your package, but running empty mid-island ruins the vibe.
- Night riding without checking your lights. Test them before you leave.
- Late returns. Rental clocks are strict, so please, call us if you need more time.
- Leaving valuables in the under-seat box. Remember to always bring them with you.
