Where To Drive Your Scooter in Key West 101
05/14/2021
You’ve rented a scooter and you’re ready to explore Key West. Not sure where to start? Don’t worry. There are tons of beautiful and exciting destinations that are scooter-friendly in the city. Whether you want to hang out on a beach, take in the wildlife, or visit top attractions, your rental scooter can take you to the perfect places for all of those things.
The Southernmost Point
If you’re vacationing in Key West, you can’t complete the trip without heading to the southernmost point buoy. It’s colorful and fun to take in but what makes the trip worthwhile is that this location is the most photographed in the entire city. You’ll see people lined up to get a photo taken with the Florida buoy. Offer to take a photo for another group and they’ll likely do the same for you. It’s easy to ride a scooter down to the famous buoy.
East Martello Tower
This is a tower located on Higgs Beach but it’s far more than just another beach destination. It acts as a museum that offers a glimpse of the cultural past of Key West. Ride your scooter down and park to take in all the artwork and artifacts that offer a look at the colorful history of this brilliant city. For those who like visiting spooky locations, you’re also in luck: The tower is home to Robert the Doll.
Old Town
If you’re on the north side, take your scooter down palm-lined lanes on North Roosevelt Boulevard. This will lead you down by the Gulf of Mexico and right through some of the best retail shopping in all of Key West. Grab some souvenirs or keep trekking down until you reach Old Town. It’s a great location to have some fun on a scooter.
Higgs Beach
If you’re visiting East Martello Tower, you can also spend some time at Higgs Beach with your rental scooter. You can hang out under the palms and along the sand as you journey to the Key West Garden Club. Go to the other side of the beach to take in West Martello Tower or spend some time at the White Street Pier, where you can take beautiful photos and enjoy some of the best views in the entire state.
Mallory Square
Mallory Square is a place everyone should visit at least once. If it’s a quiet time of day, the full plaza may be open just for you. During more busy moments, you could be surrounded by hundreds of other people watching for the moment when the green flash of sunset happens. The great thing about Mallory Square is how many attractions are nearby, including the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, the Custom House, the Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum, and the Key West Aquarium.
Fort Zachary Taylor State Park
If you want to enjoy the sun, sand, and a whole lot more, consider visiting this state park. It’s located on the oceanfront and has restrooms, a concession stand, picnic areas, a beautiful beach, and even a Civil War fort. The park entrance is also near locations like the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Ingham Museum and the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center.
